My Blog #3

INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM

How can we purposefully integrate technology and design learning experiences to engage young adolescents?

We integrate technology as a means of sharing information and communicating with one another, and also offer opportunities to enhance my student’s cognitive and social abilities. Integrating technology in my classroom can expose my students to animals, objects, people, landscapes, activities, and places that they cannot experience in person. It can also help my students save, document, revisit, and share their real-life experiences through images, stories, and sounds.

The SAMR (The Substitution Augmentation Modification Redefinition Model) is a
method of how computer technology might impact teaching and learning. It also shows our
development with educational technology often follow as we progress through teaching and learning
with technology.
Modification level is where technology is being used more effectively not to do the
same task using different tools but to redesign new parts of the task and transform students learning.
Two weeks ago I had my students write an essay around the theme “Celebrate what’s Around Us”,
after they done writing their essay I then have them read their essay in front of the class while an audio
recording of the essay is made along with the original musical soundtrack. During our PTC (Parents
Teacher Conference) I played the recording in front of the parents, principal, teachers and of course my
students. I was so happy with the positive feedback and comments from parents and teacher, also my
students were able to use the recording as to integrate music and their writing....
I'm not an expert in technology but I'm learning a lot from this class I hope that after this course I will
able to learn more.

MY EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY:
I started my career as an educator on August 19th, 1996. In other words it has been sixteen and a half years now since I have chosen teaching as my profession. I am still on an educational journey to further my education so that I can become a competent as well as an effective lead teacher in the classroom.
I was a Front Desk Cashier at Rainmaker before I became a teacher. Becoming a teacher was the last thing on my mind. However, when I got married and gave birth to my first child, my mind started to wonder how am I going to help my child when she attends school. Will I be able to guide her when she needs help on her homework? Do I have the knowledge as a teacher to educate her? These were the wonder questions that motivated me to get a job in the teaching field. I wanted to be trained as a teacher so that I could be able to teach my own child. Anyhow, what started out as a regular job for me, now becomes my passion.

Post Assignment #1 (Journey of the 21st Century)

Journey of the 21st Century

Talofa my name is Petesa Tuliloa-Paselio
"Children are likely to live up to what you believe of them" (Lady Bird Johnson). i have brought this quote into attention to sum up all what i have learned and shared through out the years of this program.
As a third generation educator of my family, I know that we are drawn to this profession because we feel a good cost. We want to be good teachers. We want to guide and shape children to become ethical, smart, contributing members of society. We want to change the world for the better. And we do.
This I am fortunate to use the SMART BOARD in my classroom..The SMART Board interactive whiteboards improved the communication and the social constructivism. The interactive whiteboards turned an activity that uses technology into a 21st century learning activity by encouraging all those 21st century skills, such as communication, critical thinking, media literacy and the like.
I downloaded the History of social Studies game, It was great! I loved the game itself. The graphics were wonderful and the tasks were stimulating.
Half of the class worked on the game as individuals on laptops while the other half of the class worked in small teams of three and four at SMART Board interactive whiteboards.
It was fascinating to watch the teams work together to solve the game. Although the students at 1:1 laptops were in close proximity and gathered around tables, their interactions were very limited. Just because students are arranged in a collaborative shape, each with their own technology, working on the same problem does not mean that they will actually collaborate.
However, the students gathered around the interactive whiteboards were talking, discussing, in some cases arguing, and working as a team. The SMART Board interactive whiteboards improved the communication and the social constructivism. The interactive whiteboards turned an activity that uses technology into a 21st century learning activity by encouraging all those 21st century skills, such as communication, critical thinking, media literacy and the like.
Being a good teacher all day, every day, for every child is extremely challenging, especially in the midst of the rapid technological, economic, political, and social change that defines the 21st century. To meet this challenge, teachers need tools that will enable them to inspire 21st century learners to do their best work and thrive as contributing citizens in an increasingly complex world.
"Good Teaching Changes the Future." Together, we can change the world. (Lora Hodges, 2013)
